A Note from Jay Phillips
Deer Park Families:
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! Let me first start by thanking you for allowing me to serve Deer Park Community City School District over the last four years as Director of Curriculum and Assistant Superintendent. I am extremely excited and grateful to serve in a new role as your Superintendent of Schools for this upcoming school year.
These are exciting times for our school district! The renovation and new construction at Amity Elementary are in full swing. Our lead contractor, HGC Construction, has been very busy this summer. They have installed brand new windows, begun interior renovations of the existing building, installed new underground storm lines, constructed a new mechanical room, and demolished the gymnasium to pave the way for new construction to begin. There is still much more work to be completed over the next 12 months. As a reminder, the new addition to Amity Elementary will be constructed during the school year while the students are in session. During breaks such as weekends and holidays, our construction team will also continue to move forward with the interior renovation work. Most importantly for our staff, students, and community is that the project continues to be ON TIME and ON BUDGET with a completely renovated and expanded Amity Elementary School slated to open in the fall of 2018.
Another exciting initiative that we are launching for the first time this fall is full day kindergarten. We will welcome our first class of full day kindergartners when school resumes on Monday, August 14. This is a commitment our Board of Education made to our community during the community conversations that were held over the winter of 2015 and spring/summer of 2016. We are extremely proud to see this promise come to fruition.
At Deer Park Schools, our focus continues to be on high academic student achievement, service learning, and creating a positive and supportive culture that encourages students to perform to their highest potential. Preliminary data from the spring state assessments are in and early analysis shows tremendous improvement across the board. We are very encouraged by these results and will continue pushing to move the needle forward.
One of my personal goals this school year is to expand our outreach to staff, students, parents, and community members to truly understand what you feel are our priorities, what you feel are our strengths, and what you feel are our greatest areas for growth. To accomplish this, I will be conducting listening sessions throughout the months of August, September, October, and November. I am also inserting a link in this letter that will connect you to a brief survey. This survey will give us valuable information and, in conjunction with the listening sessions, will help direct our five-year strategic plan. You can find the survey by clicking the link here - Deer Park Community City School District Survey. I encourage all staff, students, parents, and community members to complete the survey.
Finally, I would like to say that all of these exciting events that are taking place in our school district to benefit our students wouldn’t happen without each of you! I want to thank you as parents, community members, and business leaders for being such tremendous supporters of Deer Park Community City School District. The staff and administration will continue to work incredibly hard for you to achieve our District’s Mission: To provide ALL students with every opportunity to achieve their future goals.
On behalf of our Board of Education and our entire school district staff, we thank you!
Yours in Education,
