Elementary English and Language Arts:  K – 6

In 2010 and as an outcome of collaboration between The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center), the state adopted the Common Core State Standards in English and Language Arts as part of Ohio's New Learning Standards for academic learning.  These standards are expected to be fully implemented in 48 states, two territories, and the District of Columbia by the 2014-2015 school year.

It is important for you to know that in our deep commitment to bring our students the best instruction available, Deer Park’s classrooms have already been working dutifully to implement the Ohio’s New Learning Standards via a phase-in process. K-6 teachers have studied, implemented, and are working to refine practices necessary to honor the intent of these standards. To give our 21st century learners the advantage of successfully competing in a global economy and society, we strive to produce learners who are equipped with college and career-readiness skills. Classroom learning is aligned with college and work expectations, rigorous in content and application, reliant upon higher-order thinking skills, and research-based.

Deer Park’s K-6 ELA program commits itself to producing students with the ability to read and comprehend increasingly complex literature and informational text.  Additionally and quite significantly, there is more to this curriculum strand than simply reading.  It is the absolute measure of comprehension, the ability to reason and write logically, purposefully, and persuasively from the earliest grades on up to which we devote our efforts. Young learners are taught research skills and the ability to analyze their learning, generate their thoughts, and to produce their findings in cohesive written form. This process is one which occurs as a result of cooperative speaking and listening both formally and informally.  Naturally, and as it occurs in professional settings and boardrooms across the world, students are actively collaborating and integrating media and technology as they solve problems and forge new understandings.  

 

READ 180 TRAINING

Career and College Readiness for ALL students is our goal!  So, several teachers in grades 4-8 took the last few days of their summer to attend READ 180 training.  Read 180 is a proven research based reading intervention program.  Both Amity and the Junior High will have access to this comprehensive system of curriculum, instruction and assessment for their struggling readers.  The program is designed for any student reading two or more years below grade-level.  READ 180 leverages adaptive technology to individualize instruction for students and provides powerful data to help a teacher differentiate student instructional needs.  To learn more about this new program contact your building administrators at Amity and the Junior High.
