Deer Park High School Students Attend Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program
Chrissy Boehmer and Sarah Sheppard chosen for the all-expense-paid Freedoms Foundation conference
This week, two juniors at Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School, a Deer Park Community City School, will travel to Valley Forge, PA on an all-expense-paid trip to the Freedoms Foundation’s Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program. The four-day residential program for high school students interested in cultivating a better understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
“These ladies were nominated by myself and Mr. Sean Maher based on their outstanding achievement in social studies courses. [Chrissy Boehmer and Sarah Sheppard] have demonstrated strong leadership skills and initiative as well as an interest in contemporary American issues. After they were nominated, they went through an interview process with a representative from the Freedom Foundation before being chosen to attend,” said Shannon Wilkerson, AP Government Educator at Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School.
The selected Deer Park students will travel with several other Cincinnati area students and interact and collaborate with their peers from around the country. According to the website, the Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program includes thought-provoking lectures, historical tours, and experiential workshops, all designed to develop leadership skills and deepen an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of engaged citizenship.
“The Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program is a great opportunity for Deer Park students to learn about themselves, their country, and the world around them,” said Jeff Langdon, Superintendent at Deer Park Community City Schools. “In Deer Park, we take community seriously and our Deer Park educators value their responsibility to impart the skills needed for our students to become tomorrow’s leaders.”
