Principal's Message

Mr. Dave Bergan

Dear Amity Elementary Families:

It’s hard to believe we’re already back in school!  Things have been busy this summer as we’ve made many building improvements, and prepared for a great school year.  Here are a few highlights for you as we get back into the swing of things.

New Staff
  • 3rd Grade:  We’re excited to have a talented third grade team added to the Amity Staff.  Mrs. Caroline Kwiat (Math & Science) will be paired with Mrs. Jill Jones (English/Language Arts & Social Studies), and Mrs. Celeste Simonson (Math & Science) will be paired with Mrs. Donna Beiting (ELA & SS).  To accommodate our larger numbers in the third grade, Mrs. Mae O’Hara will be teaching an additional class of 3rd grade students.
  • Physical Education: We are pleased to welcome Ms. Callen Martin as our new PE teacher at Holmes & Amity.  Ms. Martin is coming to us as after teaching Physical Education for two years at Winton Prep.
  • Specialized Classroom:  We have added a specialized classroom to meet our student needs.  Mrs. Susan Butts is moving from our Jr./Sr. High to Amity to lead this new opportunity for our students.
  • Intervention Specialist:  Mrs. Kerri Gutekunst will be working with both 3rd grade and Kindergarten this year.  She is making the move from a 4th grade classroom position, and we’re excited to have her here in Deer Park.
Building Improvements
Outside of the building you will see repaired concrete, new fencing on E. Galbraith Rd., a new roof on the main part of the building, and replaced exterior doors in the rear of the building.  Inside, we replaced old ceiling tiles, retiled the upstairs hallway, installed new carpet in our music areas on the lower level, and touched up paint throughout the building.  Our five new classrooms were remodeled with new furniture and boards, and both the office area and the nurse’s room were updated.  We are proud of the all the work that was accomplished this summer.  Our maintenance crew deserves a huge thank you for working so hard to make it all happen.

Added Student Computers
This summer we added eight additional carts of student laptop computers.  This will allow us to have a cart in every fifth and sixth grade classroom.  Our third and fourth grade will have six carts to share among nine classes.  We will work throughout the year to add additional devices so that we reach our goal of having a cart of computers in every room.

Forms Changes
This year our handbook has been posted online.  If you would like a hard copy please call the office and we will send a copy home.  We have also eliminated our white index card for contact information.  Instead, we will use the information from our Emergency Medical Form to update contacts in our system.  Please be sure to list all valuable contacts and updated phone numbers on the Emergency Medical Form.

Updated Building Behavior Plan
Last year we began looking at our building wide behavior plan.  It had been over twenty years since it was last updated.  We felt it needed to include the more recent programs in the building, and to reflect our current students.  At the end of the year we gave students a survey asking what types of rewards would motivate them.  Students responded with a strong desire to include weekly incentives, instead of rewards occurring on a quarterly basis.  We developed a system that uses “StEP Bucks” (pretend currency earned by making positive daily choices), to allow students to participate in weekly reward time.  We will continue to have our quarterly StEP Store, where students will have the chance to spend, save or donate the money they earned for the quarter.  We’re confident these changes will help create a positive climate in the building.

New Morning Routine
This year we will start with a new morning routine.  Rather than having students gather and line up outside the building on nice days, students will gather in assigned locations inside the building every day.  Students eating breakfast should report to the cafeteria at 7:30am.  All other students should report to the building at 7:45am.  6th Grade will meet in the cafeteria, while 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will meet in the gym.

No More Early Release
As you look at the School Calendar this year, you will notice that we no longer have early release times on Wednesdays.  Instead, we will have an occasional full day of staff professional development.  Students will not report to school on these days.  Be sure to look ahead and plan accordingly.  Our district calendar will be sent home the first week of school, and can also be found at:

Curriculum Night
This year, in addition to our Meet & Greet, Amity Elementary will host its first ever curriculum night.  Grade levels will start every 30 minutes, and our hope is that families will be able to learn more about student routines and expectations.
