| Revisions Made to the Deer Park City Schools Grading Scale |
|
|
Based on suggestions and questions posed during the September 2009 Curriculum & Instructional Support Council meeting, a committee was formed to study the revision of the current Deer Park grading scale. The committee determined, following their research, discussion, and solicitation of stakeholder input, to recommend the revision of the current grading scale, an 8 point scale, to a 10 point scale.
Research revealed many advantages in making this change. Listed below are just a few that were repeatedly mentioned in literature on the subject, and in studies done by neighboring districts.
1. A higher grade point average (GPA) makes college admissions possible for more students.
2. A higher GPA also makes more students eligible for scholarships and to participate in athletics.
3. This change comes at NO cost to the district.
4. Graduating students today become part of an ever increasing pool of applicants for a fixed number of college entry spots.
5. Most colleges consider only the GPA of applicants. In fact, when surveyed in 2008 by the Milford district, five out of eight universities responded that they did not consider the grading scale of the high school.
6. Most colleges use a ten point grading scale. Nineteen out of thirty districts in our area and the College Board use a ten point scale as well.
7. Higher GPAs yield lower auto insurance rates.
8. This revision could positively impact student self-esteem, and motivate more students to attempt Honors or Advanced Placement classes.
When soliciting input from all stakeholders, an online survey was made available to parents through Progress Book, and to staff through Zoomerang. Eighty-six percent of the teachers who responded and eighty-eight percent of the parents who responded recommended the proposed revision. The committee also received a petition signed by 203 high school students requesting the proposed change, and one very persuasive email from a current high school junior.
In conclusion, after thoughtful discussion and research, it was the decision of the Deer Park Board of Education to revise the grading scale as follows:
Present Scale
A 92-100
B 83-91.9
C 74-82.9
D 65-73.9
F Below 65
REVISED SCALE: Effective August 2010
A 90-100
B 80-89.9
C 70-79.9
D 60-69.9
F Below 60
There will be NO retroactive alteration of grades already earned. Where applicable, transcripts will note the grading scale prior to fall of 2010 and the new scale for the fall of 2010 forward.
