Breaking Down the Report Card: Part 3

Breaking Down the Report Card: Part 3

Readers in Ms. Baker's 2nd Grade Class (2016)

Dear Families and Community Members of Deer Park Schools:

Continuing our series of releases on the annual report card, today we would like to help you better understand the K-3 Literacy component of the report card.

We are very pleased to announce that since the inception of the Third Grade Guarantee, 100% of Deer Park third graders have met the benchmark on either the state reading assessment or another state approved alternative reading assessment. We are very proud of the efforts of our students and the teachers who work diligently to help our students be successful.

K-3 Literacy:
The K-3 Literacy component looks at how successful schools are at getting struggling readers on track to proficiency in third grade and beyond. K-3 Literacy Improvement uses results from two assessments: a reading diagnostic given to all students in kindergarten through grade 3 at the beginning of the school year; and Ohio’s state third grade English language arts test given to third-graders twice during the school year.

The grades for this measure and component are based on the percentage of students in each of the following situations:

  • Students who were not on track in reading last year in kindergarten and now are on track in first grade;
  • Students who were not on track in reading in first grade and now are on track in second grade;
  • Students who were not on track in reading in second grade and now are on track in third grade; and,
  • Students who were not on track in reading at the beginning of third grade who scored  “Proficient” on Ohio’s third grade English language arts test.

The ODE also allows school districts to give a state approved alternative assessment to third grade students to test for proficiency in reading.  Deer Park Schools uses the Terra Nova assessment as an alternative assessment, which is approved by the ODE. While this assessment is approved by the ODE, it’s important to note that the ODE does not report the results of this alternative assessment on the state report card. In the 2015-16 school year, 100% of Deer Park third graders met the required benchmark on the Terra Nova reading assessment.
