Deer Park High School girls’ dance team has many exciting routines planned for this season. The dancers have been busting their butts since early in the school year to perfect their 3 dance routines consisting of a Pom routine, kickline and hip hop.
“Each dance uses very different music and movements that we feel brings out something fun or unexpected in the songs,” First year coach, Melissa Knueven, said.
There are two new coaches this year named Melissa Knueven and Caitlin Gavin. They have been best friends for twelve years and are both Deer Park alumni, class of 2009.
There are several recurring members of the dance team, along with their two new dancers, Daniela Chacon, and Destiney Carmichael.
“I’m excited that I’m doing something I’ve never done before and [I love] the new people I get to meet doing dance,” Chacon said.
All of the dance routines and the songs that go with, are very diverse. They have everything from classic rock, to rap and hip hop, to pop songs.
“For [our] Pom [routine], we are using a mix of classic rock songs like ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ by Guns N’ Roses. For kickline, we’re using an upbeat pop song from a few years ago. For hip hop, we’re using a mix of rap and hip hop songs by Kanye West and Beyoncé,” Said Knueven.
Since this is the first year Gavin and Knueven are coaching, they not only choreograph and teach the routines, they also make sure the dancers are prepared for the performances. They practice every Monday and Wednesday evening, and they even have 6 a.m. Saturday practices!
If anyone wants to catch these fierce girls in action, they can come to any of the home, boys’ basketball games or the Winter sports pep rallies! They are also going to participate in one or two competitions this season. The first home basketball game is Friday, November 11th at 6:00 p.m.
