Curtain Call for The Deer Park Marching Wildcats
Season Ends with Trip to State Competition
The Deer Park High School Band and Guard ended their season at the University of Dayton’s Welcome Stadium with their 24th consecutive Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) State performance. The Marching Wildcats presented their 2016 Marching Band Show—The Silver Screen—to a packed house and left with a 2-EXCELLENT rating as their final curtain call this year.
“The directors and staff knew that the band and guard would be filled with talented young artists this year. As such, we challenged them with a demanding program of technically difficult music and routines. Few bands our size are willing to take on the task of learning such a rigorous show, but the heart of our program is the development of our students' musical abilities and work ethic,” said Deer Park Head Band Director Matt Suddendorf. “Regardless of the challenges placed upon them this year, the members of the 2016 Marching Wildcats responded to The Silver Screen show with tremendous dedication and spirit, which is reflected in their unmatched results.”
The Silver Screen came to fruition when the Deer Park Marching Staff—Mr. Matt Suddendorf, Mr. Joe Vetter, Mrs. Brenda Livingston, and Mr. Scott McFarland—began planning the 2016 season. These talented and dedicated individuals are assisted by an amazing technical team that helps bring these ideas to life on the field. The show left the drawing board and was put into production in early July as students came to school during summer break to start running music and marching. The show first hit the road at Band Camp, where the team added the final touches. The Marching Wildcats held their premier at Deer Park’s first home football game on the new, all-weather turf “stage.”
“This was truly an incredible season for the Deer Park color guard. I always try and challenge the girls, and this year was no exception. I am proud to be a part of this organization. It takes parents, directors, students, and an energetic prop squad to make this thing we call ‘Marching Band’ work. I also had the aid of my daughter, McCartney Johnson, and my husband, Nelson Livingston, to push the team to go beyond and try new things. I have loved the 25 years I have been the color guard director and I look forward to many more years with this wonderful group of people,” said Deer Park Color Guard Instructor Brenda Livingston.
The Silver Screen was performed at home and away games as well as at numerous Marching Band Competitions throughout the season. It was well received by audiences everywhere as fans and judges alike cheered to movie music from: Batman, Sound of Music (My Favorite Things), the 1930s hit The Red Pony, The Wizard of Oz (Somewhere Over the Rainbow), and finally the closer—Rocky (!). The Marching Wildcats qualified early in their season for the State Competition by receiving a 1 rating. This trip to State marks the 24th consecutive time the Marching Wildcats competed at State.
“As the final curtain closes on this award winning show, on behalf of the Deer Park Band Sponsors, the entire Marching Staff, the students, and the parents, we would like to thank the Deer Park Community, the Deer Park Schools Board of Education, the Deer Park Schools Administration, and the City of Deer Park for their never ending support! We could not do what we do without all of you,” concluded Band Sponsor President Lisa Robinson
