The Amity School design team met to continue their design and input with the architect (SHP) and general contractor (HGC) for the Amity School.
Many items were discussed, including the bidding of the "Window Package" which includes restoring Amity to its original grandeur with high efficiency windows. To accommodate these windows many of the ceilings in the classrooms will be slanted at an angle and will be high at the window side of the room and lower at the interior wall side..... This will give a very modern look to the newly renovated part of Amity.
Engineers and architects have toured and surveyed the building to determine which type of heating and cooling (HVAC) systems will work most efficiently in the school.
An inventory of "historical items" that are housed in Amity is being conducted and the Architects hope to incorporate them into the new design.
Many things are occurring behind and beneath the scenes. A 3D scan of the entire building is taking place to help the architects identify thicknesses of walls, ceilings and floors and be sure that no electrical items are overlooked. This week during after school hours, cameras will be lowered down into the sewer system of Amity to detail the pipes and capacity of each for planning of many more restrooms throughout the building.

On Monday, January 23, Deer Park Schools invited the community to attend a forum to discuss the Amity construction project. At the beginning of the forum, Ms. Cindy Homan, longtime educator at Amity Elementary, gave a brief history lesson of the school and district. Afterwards, Mr. Charlie Jahnigan, lead architect of SHP Leading Design Firm, took the community through a presentation (click to view). Mr Jahnigan detailed the work that has already gone into the project, the meetings with the design teams, as well as the scope of the project. After the presentation, SHP invited questions and suggestions from the community.
There will be several more community forums to update the community as the project progresses.
