On May 6, 2015, Deer Park Community City School District (DPCCSD) celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for the complete renovation and buildout of the lower level at the Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School that will become home to the new Deer Park Career Academies center and athletic facilities.

“This spring, our Deer Park Board of Education met with our construction manager, Performance Construction, to finalize the maximum guaranteed price and with our architects, SHP Leading Design, to set the schedule for the updated facilities. We’ve set a tight timeline so we’ll be able to move into the new facilities this August,” said Jeff Langdon, Superintendent at DPCCSD.

Called the “Deer Park Career Academies,” DPCCSD is quite literally building and adding to the electives available to its 7-12 grade students. Not only will students choose from a new, innovative portfolio of career pathways-aligned elective courses, but they will also learn in 21st-century ready classrooms that will provide team breakout rooms, mock interview spaces, and innovative spaces to provide the students with a real world feel of business practices conveniently in their own high school. These classrooms will take up half of the lower level of the building.

“We will never forget the rich traditions in the Deer Park district, but we are ever mindful of the competitive global workforce our graduates will enter after graduation,” said Donna Farrell, Deer Park Board of Education President. “This exciting new space will enhance learning experiences for our students...and expose them to many emerging careers. Tonight’s groundbreaking is not just about construction, but it is also about offering groundbreaking new electives for our students.”

Housed next door to the Career Academies, the Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School students, athletes, coaches, and visiting teams will enjoy brand new locker rooms, coaches’ offices, a trainer room, and a state-of-the-art weight and cardio room. Collaboration for this project began a year ago with the help of community members, coaches, and Deer Park staff.

“These two projects reflect the commitment Deer Park Schools has to its community, staff, and students. They asked. We listened. We know our athletes, coaches, students, and teachers work hard all year and that is why we want to see them use the latest equipment, train in a modern facility, and learn in a cutting edge space outfitted with the newest technology and modular furnishings,” said Langdon.
