Deer Park High School Marching Band and Guard Receives 1 Superior Rating at OMEA State Competition
This is the 23rd Consecutive Trip to State for the Marching Wildcats
On Sunday, November 1, the Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School MARCHING BAND AND GUARD competed at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Marching Band Finals and they received the highest possible mark in the State of Ohio for a high school band, a 1 Superior rating.
“It's great to be the principal at a school with such a history of excellence or pride in the arts. This season of marching band has brought about a revitalization of school spirit at Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School and what it truly means to be a Wildcat!” said Dr. Stace Orso, Principal at Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School.
The 86-member ensemble, consisting of winds, percussion, and color guard, qualified for state at the Harrison High School “Sounds of the Stadium” competition. The Deer Park Marching Wildcats once again represented Deer Park Community City School District at the OMEA State Marching Band Finals. This is the 23rd consecutive trip to the state finals for the Marching Wildcats.
“The Deer Park High School Marching Wildcats have always been one of the Greatest Shows on Turf. And this year, the students, staff, and directors proved that point in the best way possible. Of the 10 comparably-sized bands across Ohio who also competed at OMEA State Finals, only four--Deer Park included--earned the Superior rating,” said Matt Suddendorf, Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School Marching Band Director.
Suddendorf says the level of growth the students demonstrated throughout the course of the competition season was particularly noteworthy. In fact, at the Marching Wildcat’s first competition at Tipp City on September 19, the band scored one of its lowest scores on record. This score fueled the Wildcats to improve and to earn their state rating, which they did by improving over 45 total points.
“The Deer Park Marching Wildcats have certainly achieved a lot this year, and will continue to offer wonderful performances in the coming months. We thank the community, especially our [Deer Park] Band Family and Band Sponsor volunteers, for supporting us in achieving our goals. Deer Park Band…Band For Life!” Concluded Suddendorf.
Directors for the Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School Band are Matt Suddendorf with assistance from Joe Vetter and Scott McFarland. The color guard is under the direction of Brenda Livingston with assistance from McCartney Johnson. The Marching Wildcats staff includes Danny Groh, Connor Wood, Amy Mueller, Symon Jones, Austin Lovins, Kalina Procas, Nelson Livingston, Lizzy Schradin, and Chris Rolfes.
