Federal grants are dollars received by the district from Federal sources, such as the U.S. Department of Education.
Deer Park Schools participates in the Federal programs:
Grant Name: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Part B (IDEA-B)
Grant Purpose: “Providing for the education and services of students with a disability, to strengthen education, drive reforms, and improve results for students ages 3 through 21.”
Grant Expenditures: Districts may use IDEA-B funds for Instruction, Support Services, Staff/Parent Visits, Governance, Professional Development, Family and Community Engagement, Transportation, Supplies/Materials, and Equipment.
At Deer Park, these funds are used to pay for aide support, intervention programs, supplies/materials for specialized classroom units, professional development, and other instructional related items that are required for each student’s education.
Grant Results: Students are receiving the support services they require to get the education they deserve. In addition, intervention programs purchased with IDEA-B funds are allowing students to make large strides in the core content areas of Reading and Math.
Grant Name: Title III, Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient (LEP) and Immigrant Students
Grant Purpose: To help all LEP students attain proficiency, provide tools to meet the same academic standards as other students, and create LEP instructional programs.
Grant Expenditures: Districts may use Title III funds for effective instructional programs, increasing English proficiency, increasing student achievement in core subjects, and professional development for teachers/LEP staff to improve instruction.
At Deer Park, these funds are put into a consortium with other districts at Hamilton County Educational Service Center. This allows the district to get a larger ‘bang for the buck’ by having access to a more extensive LEP library and warehouse, as well as enhanced professional development.
Grant Results: Deer Park has been using the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention system for LEP students. Students use the system for reading and writing interventions.
Grant Name: Title I, Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged/Basic Program
Grant Purpose: “The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.”

Grant Expenditures: Districts may use Title I funds for Instruction, Support Services, Staff/Parent Visits, Governance, Professional Development, Family and Community Engagement, Homeless Transportation, Supplies/Materials, and Equipment.
Title I has two label options for school buildings: Schoolwide and Targeted. With a target program funds are only used for Title I eligible students. If a building meets a poverty threshold of 40%, the building can be deemed Schoolwide and funds can be used to assist every student. Holmes Elementary and Amity Elementary are both Title I Schoolwide buildings.
At Deer Park, these funds are used to pay for a Title I specialist, intervention programs, supplies/materials for classrooms, professional development, homeless transportation, and other instructional related items that are required for each student’s education. Funds also go to local nonpublic schools that are educating our students who meet Title I eligibility requirements. A portion of Title I dollars go to the Schoolwide Pool.
Grant Results: Intervention programs purchased with Title I funds are allowing students to make large strides in the core content areas of Reading and Math. In addition, students receive Title I services through a dedicated Title I teacher.
Grant Name: Early Childhood Special Education
Grant Purpose: To supplement current funds provided under IDEA-B for educational services related to children with disabilities.

Grant Expenditures: Districts may use ECSE funds for the same items as IDEA-B.
At Deer Park, these funds are used to pay for part of a speech pathologist.
Grant Results: The District is able to meet the growing need for speech related services for special education students, especially in the lower grades.
Grant Name: Title II-A, Improving Teacher Quality
Grant Purpose: To increase student achievement and hold districts accountable for student achievement through improving the quality of building staff.

Grant Expenditures: Districts may use II-A funds for the recruiting and retention of highly qualified staff and providing professional development for building staff and other leaders.
At Deer Park, these funds are used for professional development. A portion of Title II-A dollars go to the Schoolwide Pool.
Grant Results: Staff members are able to attend professional development that expands their educational knowledge and creates a better learning environment for students.
Grant Name: Schoolwide Pool
Grant Purpose: Schoolwide Pool allows a school district to consolidate Federal and Local/State funds in order to maximize efficiency of resources.

Grant Expenditures: Only items that the school district deems eligible for Schoolwide Pool that address educational aspects of the District’s business are eligible for the Pool.
At Deer Park, these funds are used for the salaries and benefits of regular education teachers at Holmes Elementary. Holmes is the only building in the District eligible for Schoolwide Pool.
Grant Results: Regular education teachers at Holmes Elementary are meeting the needs of all students while allowing the district to spend its Federal dollars with fewer restrictions.
