State Grants

State grants are dollars received by the district from State sources, such as the Ohio Department of Education. Deer Park Community City Schools participates in the State programs listed below.

Grant Name: High Schools That Work (HSTW)

Grant Purpose: “High Schools That Work is a research-based school improvement initiative. It is founded on the conviction that students can master a rigorous curriculum that is relevant to their future and presented in a supportive environment. High expectations, challenging programs, active student engagement and comprehensive guidance in a culture of continuous improvement are some key practices.

Grant Expenditures: Districts may use HSTW funds for four activities: aligning academic and career courses to standards, increasing student opportunities for advanced courses, implementing the HSTW model, and creating committees that help the District with decisions related to curriculum, guidance, and staff development.

At Deer Park dollars are used to pay for a School Improvement Coordinator, fees to be part of HSTW, and instructional supplies/materials.

Grant Amount: For FY15, Deer Park received an allocation of $6,000.00.

Grant Results: Students are being given the opportunity to see more rigorous content in their classes at Deer Park High School. In addition, career related activities are being woven into already existing curriculum.

Grant Name: Straight A Round 1 – Blended Learning (ELLIS)

Grant Purpose: To provide Districts with the tools and professional development necessary to implement a Blended Learning approach in their classrooms. Straight A grants are competitive grants, which means many districts submit their ideas and only a few are chosen for awards.

Grant Expenditures: The bulk of expenditures under this grant were made by the main district, Groveport Madison, to BGSU to create the program and professional development pieces.

At Deer Park dollars were used to purchase new technology for teachers 7-12, as well as stipends and benefits for participating staff and substitute services.

Grant Amount: For FY14/FY15, Deer Park received an allocation of $90,900.00.

Grant Results: Teachers are using new ways of learning for students that are in line with today’s learners, bringing classrooms into the 21st century.

Grant Name: Straight A Round 2 – Learning Reengineered

Grant Purpose: To re-engage the District’s students who have the biggest hurdles through new instructional practices designed to capture and hold their attention and address varying needs. Straight A grants are competitive grants, which means many districts submit their ideas and only a few are chosen for awards.

Grant Expenditures: Hamilton County Educational Service Center is the lead on this project. Components include Rock and Roll Academy (social/emotional learning), Usher’s Music Industry Leadership (engage learners and provide career related learning), Smart Horizons (online career program with credit recovery option), and Contemporary Learning Institutes (professional development for teachers to transform teaching practices).

At Deer Park dollars are being used for technology implementation, substitute teacher costs, and stipends and benefits for participating staff members.

Grant Amount: For FY15/FY16, Deer Park received an allocation of $106,875.00.

Grant Results: Learning Reengineered is still in its first partial year of implementation. The Rock and Roll Academy was launched during FY15 and staff members attended their first Contemporary Learning Institutes course. All four pieces of the grant are anticipated to be in use for the FY16 school year.
