Course Rationale

Introduction for Journalism will all students to develop both writing and copy editing skills, while exposing them to career opportunities in the field of English and writing. The course will work to strengthen student writing and editing, while also granting students the  opportunity to explore photojournalism and design. It will also serve as a preparatory course for student interested in potentially contributing to Deer Park High School’s yearbook and newspaper print publications. 

Research supports that students involved in school publications earn higher GPAs, score better on the ACT, and demonstrated more proficient grammar and writing skills than those who do not have experiences with journalism and student publications.

This course would be an excellent addition to elective offerings at Deer Park as it covers many Common Core Language Arts standards, and also aligns with district-wide objectives underscored by career readiness—giving students firsthand exposure to a potential career in media, print publications, or journalism.
