Amity Elementary Students Embrace Community Service During Amity Week of Service

Amity Elementary students have once again showcased their commitment to serving their community during the annual Amity Week of Service. With a variety of projects spanning different grades, the students have demonstrated their compassion and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.

From Pre-K to 5th grade, each class took on unique service projects tailored to benefit different sectors of the community. Pre-K and Kindergarten students created seasonal placemats for residents at Arden Courts, spreading joy and warmth to seniors in need. First graders crafted bookmarks for the local library, encouraging a love for reading within the community.

Second graders extended their kindness to seniors by designing birthday cards for Meals on Wheels recipients, while third graders assembled goody bags for Kindergarten registration, easing the transition for incoming students and their families. Fourth graders dedicated their efforts to wrapping mini board games for children supported by A Kid Again, ensuring moments of joy for those facing challenges.

A Kid Again is Amity's StEP program charity, whose purpose is to foster hope, happiness, and healing for children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

Fifth graders ventured beyond the school grounds, with Mrs. Jones' class contributing their time to beautifying the Deer Park Municipal Building, and Mrs. Sippola's class lending a hand at Green Acres. Mr. Moulton and Ms. McNutt's classes volunteered at Meals on Wheels, providing vital support to the organization's mission.

The Week of Service isn't over yet for the sixth graders, who will be visiting Matthew 25 Ministries next week to extend their service to those in need.

Reflecting on their experiences, students shared their heartfelt thoughts:

Millie Walker, a 5th grader who volunteered for A Kid Again, expressed, "My favorite part was wrapping games for kids that they don’t have to buy. I enjoyed it because I got to help people that need help that can’t afford to buy things."

Mollie Querry, a 5th grader who volunteered at Green Acres, shared, "My favorite part was either picking up trash or digging and picking plants. I enjoyed it because it helped other people in our community."

Addie Conner, a 4th grader who also volunteered for A Kid Again, reflected, "My favorite part about participating was wrapping the gifts. I enjoyed it because I like helping people and doing kind things for people."

Aiko Haruyama, another 4th grader who participated in the A Kid Again project, remarked, "My favorite part about participating in Amity Week of Service was learning how to wrap presents better. I enjoyed it because I like to wrap presents and I think it made me a little better at wrapping. I also like helping people."

Amity Elementary remains committed to fostering a culture of service and empathy, nurturing future leaders who are compassionate and engaged citizens of the world.
