Deer Park Jr/Sr High School Wildcat Weekly: December 4, 2022

What's New?

A Message from the Principal

Hello Deer Park Families! Happy Sunday!

It is hard to believe that we are just two weeks from the holiday break. Please remind your students that the quarter ends in two weeks so they need to make sure they have everything turned in. Also, the winter exam schedule is listed below. Students should be taking time to study for those, as well! As always, please let us know if you have any questions or need anything.

John Vander Meer
Principal
Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School

Building Spotlight

In Ms. Sullivan's seventh grade social studies classes, students are learning about feudalism in the Middle Ages in Europe. Students have been assigned a role in feudalism and have been calling each other king, queen, lord, lady, and so on all week! Students' names in Class Dojo were even changed to reflect students' titles.

To help prepare for a quiz over the social classes in the feudal system, students played a game of Blooket to review then participated in an activity where they applied their knowledge of the four feudal classes: monarch, noble, knight and peasant. Students played a version of Guess Who? where they walked around the room and stopped at ten different stations where they had to guess the name of the class in feudalism based on the description given. Students also had the choice to complete this in their seats if they did not feel comfortable or want to walk around the room.

Students did a great job engaging in the Blooket game reviewing the definitions, then applying that knowledge to the activity.

Next Coffee With the Administrators

We had a great conversation at our last “Coffee with the Administrators” on building safety. Our next meeting will be on December 7th at 6:00 p.m. and could be one of the most important meetings you could go to this year. We will be talking about keeping our kids safe in this world of social media, apps, internet and cell phones. Stephan Smith from A Wired Family will be here to talk with us. He will be featured on Local 12 news in the upcoming months and has spoken to 1000’s of students and parents on this topic. I have had the pleasure of working with Stephan over the last 15 years and he is the only adult I know that knows more about the internet, social media and apps than our kids do.

If you feel inadequate at times, like I do about really knowing what kids are doing, how to manage all of this and keeping your kids safe, this is one meeting you do not want to miss. Noodles & Company will also be providing a meal on a first come, first serve basis until it is gone.

Chick-fil-A Leader Academy “Do Good December” project

Deer Park’s Chick-fil-A Leader Academy is working hard to complete its second community project of the year with its “Do Good December” project. Students are fundraising and collecting items to assemble homeless bags to pass out to the community so that we can all work together to “Pay it Forward” to someone in need.

Students will be accepting monetary donations, fundraising through a boxing event “Pennies for Punches,” and collecting items at home athletic events and winter concerts. Please help our Chick-fil-A leaders accomplish their goal of assembling 150 homeless bags.

Items that are needed include: gloves, hats, toothbrushes, toothpaste, individual wipe packets, individual tissue packets, capstick, gallon size ziplock bags and water bottles. Please know that your donations will help ALL of us pay it forward as we come together as a community to help others. Thank you in advance for your donations and help with our Chick-fil-A leaders reaching their goal!
