Deer Park Schools Mourns the Passing of Legendary Coach Jerry Wood
Deer Park Community City Schools is saddened to share the passing of former teacher, coach and Deer Park Hall of Famer Jerry Wood, whose impact on generations of Wildcats remains an important part of the district's history.
Wood joined Deer Park High School in 1960 and spent nine years serving the students of Deer Park as both an educator and coach. In the classroom, he taught American History and Government. Outside the classroom, he became one of the influential figures in Deer Park athletics during the 1960s.
Wood served as Deer Park's varsity baseball coach from 1960-69, leading the Wildcats to four league championships during his nine seasons. He also served as an assistant football coach and began his Deer Park basketball career coaching the freshman team.
In 1962, Wood took over the varsity boys basketball program, serving as head coach through 1969. During his seven seasons leading the Wildcats, Deer Park captured three league championships.
But Wood's legacy at Deer Park extended well beyond wins and championships. Throughout his career in education, he became known as a mentor and father figure to the young people he taught and coached, leaving an impression that continued long after his time on the sidelines.
Deer Park formally recognized that impact in 1997, when Wood was inducted into the Deer Park Hall of Fame. He returned to be honored again in 2012 as a recipient of the Deer Park Players with Pride Award.
Then, in 2013, Deer Park ensured his name would remain a permanent part of Wildcat athletics when the high school basketball court was officially named Coach Jerry Wood Court in his honor.
Wood's life of service extended beyond Deer Park. A 1951 graduate of Loveland High School and 1955 graduate of Wilmington College, Wood served in the United States Army from 1956-58. His military service included a remarkable assignment as a Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery from July 1957 to July 1958. He was also named Soldier of the Year for the Military District of Washington in 1957.
As Deer Park Schools celebrates its Bicentennial in 2026, we are reminded that the district's 200-year story has been shaped by people who dedicated themselves to generations of students. Coach Jerry Wood was one of those people.
His name remains on our basketball court, his accomplishments remain in our record books, and his influence lives on through the Wildcats he taught and coached.
