What's New?

A Message from the Principal

Amity Families,

Even though it was a four-day week, we still packed in plenty of learning and activities at Amity!
Our students continue to enjoy Discovery Lab, our new special this year. This week, our fourth- and fifth-grade students explored the career of an athletic trainer and learned how these healthcare professionals help keep athletes safe and healthy.

Students worked together to evaluate sports injury scenarios, identify warning signs, and determine the safest next step. They also had the opportunity to practice carefully wrapping an injured area on a stuffed animal using reusable bandages. These hands-on activities helped strengthen teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills while introducing students to another exciting career path.

We love seeing our students learning, collaborating, and trying new things throughout the school day. We are looking forward to another great week of learning and activities here at Amity!

Warmly,
Laura Warman

In Case You Missed It

Amity Safety Drill Information

As part of our district’s ongoing commitment to school safety, we regularly review and practice our building crisis plans and emergency procedures.

Over the next two weeks, Amity teachers will review lockdown procedures with students using an age-appropriate K–6 script. The focus of this training is on listening to teacher directions and knowing how to respond safely during an emergency, similar to the expectations we teach during fire and tornado drills.

Students will also be introduced to the “Run, Hide, Fight” terminology recommended for emergency situations. Our primary focus is always on helping students run to safety or hide with the guidance of their teachers. The “fight” component is discussed only as a last resort and focuses on actions such as barricading a door or using objects to distract an intruder—not seeking out or confronting an intruder.

We recognize that these are difficult topics, especially for young students. Our teachers know their students well and will present the information in a thoughtful, age-appropriate, and reassuring manner.

Following classroom instruction, Amity will hold a safety lockdown drill within the next two weeks. Prior to the drill, an announcement will be made over the PA system clearly stating that it is a drill. Students will practice locking down safely in their classrooms. The drill will last approximately 5–10 minutes, after which students will return to their normal school day.

Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or a member of the administrative team with any questions.

Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us keep Amity safe.
