A Message from the Principal

Amity Families,

Thank you for another great week at Amity! I hope everyone is enjoying the three-day weekend and finding some time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends.

Our staff and students certainly made the most of the heat this past school week! Our 1st grade students baked s’mores on the playground, while our 5th grade students put the sunshine to work by baking cookies outside. The students had a great time with these activities, and I had the opportunity to hear from many very satisfied taste-testers who shared that the s’mores and cookies were delicious!

It is always fun to see learning come to life in creative ways and to watch our students enjoy these experiences together.

We are looking forward to another great week of learning, growing, and connecting with friends and classmates.

Enjoy the rest of your long weekend, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday September 8th!

Warmly,

Laura Warman

Amity Safety Drill Information

As part of our district’s ongoing commitment to school safety, we regularly review and practice our building crisis plans and emergency procedures.

Over the next two weeks, Amity teachers will review lockdown procedures with students using an age-appropriate K–6 script. The focus of this training is on listening to teacher directions and knowing how to respond safely during an emergency, similar to the expectations we teach during fire and tornado drills.

Students will also be introduced to the “Run, Hide, Fight” terminology recommended for emergency situations. Our primary focus is always on helping students run to safety or hide with the guidance of their teachers. The “fight” component is discussed only as a last resort and focuses on actions such as barricading a door or using objects to distract an intruder—not seeking out or confronting an intruder.

We recognize that these are difficult topics, especially for young students. Our teachers know their students well and will present the information in a thoughtful, age-appropriate, and reassuring manner.

Following classroom instruction, Amity will hold a safety lockdown drill within the next two weeks. Prior to the drill, an announcement will be made over the PA system clearly stating that it is a drill. Students will practice locking down safely in their classrooms. The drill will last approximately 5–10 minutes, after which students will return to their normal school day.

Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or a member of the administrative team with any questions.

Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us keep Amity safe.

Attendance, Arrival, and Dismissal Information

Cell Phone Policy

We understand that students are starting to get cell phones in the later grades within Amity. Please help us in talking to your student about the following expectations prior to the start of school. This year Amity Elementary students will be expected to turn their cell phones off when they get to Amity in the morning and keep them off until the end of the day, this includes while waiting for the shuttle.  We believe this will help eliminate distractions throughout the academic day. All students are issued a chrome book at the beginning of the school year; there is not a need for students to access their cell phones during the school day for academic purposes. If students need to connect with you during the school day, they are welcome to use the phone in the front office to call you.
