A Message from the Principal

Dear Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School Families,
We hope you are enjoying your Labor Day weekend as we move full force into September. It has been a great start to the year, and the students have really settled into the routine of the day. We are truly blessed with an amazing student body this year, and that only happens with great support at home.
As we get deeper into the school year, you may have questions about how your student is doing in the classroom. I encourage you to reach out to your student’s teachers with any questions or concerns. We are always ready and willing to help in the front office, but your student’s teachers are the best first point of contact when it comes to their classroom progress and day-to-day learning.
We encourage you to stay connected and let us know how we can support your student. We greatly appreciate your partnership and support as we work together to help our students have a successful school year.
John Vander Meer
Principal, Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School

From Deer Park to Perú: Alum Inspires Spanish Students
|
|
Tyler Anderson, Deer Park graduate and Class of 2015, recently returned to his alma mater to speak with Señora Taylor’s Spanish students. Tyler shared his love of Spanish and his experience continuing his language education at Wright State.
Students participated in meaningful discussions about Spanish, career opportunities, and his upcoming move to Perú. Tyler emphasized the value of taking 4–5 years of a language in high school, including the opportunities it can provide in college, careers, and connecting with other cultures.
Tyler also shared how his Spanish skills allowed him to test into 300-level Spanish and save nearly $9,000 in college tuition. He encouraged students to see how far hard work and dedication can take them.
Tyler will spend the next 27 months in Perú working in the Youth Development Sector of the Peace Corps. We are proud of Tyler and wish him the best of luck as he begins this exciting journey!

Building Futures: Wildcats Explore Careers in Construction
|
|
Ms. Price’s Jobs for America’s Graduates students welcomed guests from Allied Construction Industries (ACI) to the classroom yesterday for a look at the many career opportunities available throughout the construction industry.
Our 9th and 10th graders learned that careers in construction go well beyond what they might traditionally picture. From architecture and engineering to project management, development, skilled trades, suppliers and other professional services, students explored the wide range of people and careers it takes to build and support our region.
ACI represents employers and professionals from across the commercial construction industry and works to develop workforce solutions, strengthen career pathways and connect the next generation with opportunities in the field.
Thank you to ACI for spending time with our Wildcats and helping them discover new possibilities for their futures!

You may receive an email about your student having a schedule change to provide additional support in areas identified through our building-wide I-Ready testing. This is an important support for your student’s academic growth and success, not only throughout their school career but also as they prepare for future success as a professional.
We will conduct this assessment two more times throughout the school year to measure student growth. Once students have closed the identified gap, they will be able to move out of the additional support.
We are committed to the success of every student, and this is one way we work to ensure that all of our students have the support they need to be successful. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Just a reminder to please make sure your child is meeting our dress code standards listed in the Student Handbook. You can find the Student Handbook on our website.

Picture Day is September 8th this year. Please remind your student that all students will have their picture taken, even if they do not plan to purchase school pictures. This is important so we can update our records and student profiles for each child.

Deer Park Schools to Administer Terrace Metrics Assessments for Grades 6–12
|
|
Deer Park Community City Schools will once again administer the Terrace Metrics Assessments to students in grades 6–12 throughout the fall. These assessments help the district better understand students’ social and emotional strengths and needs, ensuring that appropriate support systems are in place.
The assessment schedule is as follows:
- Amity 6th Grade: September 9
- HS Grades 7, 9 and 12: September 10
- HS Grades 8, 10, and 11: September 16
- DP Discovery: September 22
All results are confidential. Teachers will not have access to individual student data. Only members of the school’s response team—such as counselors and school psychologists—will review the results, which are available immediately after completion.
This process allows the district to identify students who may benefit from additional support strategies. If a student indicates high distress, a member of the response team will contact parents or guardians to discuss the next steps.
One possible follow-up step may involve a “Clairity” assessment provided by Clarigent Health. This assessment includes a private, ten-minute conversation with a trained member of the response team. Rather than focusing on the answers themselves, the technology analyzes speech patterns to help determine the best course of action for the student.
